How a blue disc is mastered

I am with Ted Bahns. He is a mastering engineer here at
Imation, and Ted, I understand that you can show us a
little bit about how a blue disc is mastered. Is that the
first step of the production process?

Ted Bahns: Well, no, not quite, Gary. The first thing in  DVD replication we will have to do
is gown up first.

Gary: All this? Is that really necessary?

Ted Bahns: Yes, Gary.

Gary: Well, you are the boss. Ted, how do I look?

Ted Bahns: Almost ready.

Gary: Ah, glasses.

So, Ted, what exactly are we seeing here?

Ted Bahns: Well, the first step in the manufacturing process for any
optical media is the mastering process. This is known as
the recording part, and what we have here is a deep-UV
mastering bench. This is one of nine in the world, and it
is capable of doing any type of commercial format.
